Why should I have my gutters cleaned?

Gutter cleaning is a necessary part of maintaining your home, especially if your home is surrounded by trees. Unfortunately, gutter cleaning often takes a backseat to more pressing home repairs. But clogged gutters can cause rainwater to overflow, seeping into your home’s woodwork and foundation and causing costly damage.

Cleaning your gutters can prevent drywall repairs, fix roof leaks or repair water damage to soffits and fascia. Gutter cleaning removes the leaves, nuts and twigs that prevent water from flowing away from your home. We ensure that all leaves and debris are removed from gutters and downspouts, and then check each downspout to ensure that it’s flowing.

How much does an average gutter cleaning cost?

Most gutter cleaning jobs fall within the range of $90.00 to $180.00 depending on a number of variables: size of the home, height of the house, roof slope, etc. Gutter installation prices and repairs vary greatly. It is best to call for a free estimate – with no obligation, of course.

How often should my gutters be cleaned?

Most Gary’s Gutters customers have their gutters cleaned three or four times per year, though less frequent cleaning may be adequate for some houses. It really depends on the property, the gutter system and the landscaping. (e.g. trees with blossoms, pollen strings, leaves, pine needles, seeds, acorns, sticks and other debris, tree height & proximity to home) Here is our recommended annual gutter cleaning schedule:

  • Late spring (late May through end of June): to rid your gutters of accumulated winter debris. This includes tender tree foliage which is blown off the trees along with blossoms and pollen strings which clog your gutters providing a perfect breeding ground for mosquito larva.
  • Mid to late summer (August through mid-September): despite the fact that most leaves are firmly attached to the trees, some still come down and end up in the gutters. Thunderstorms, strong winds and drought, all contribute to large accumulations of leaves, sticks and debris in gutters during this time.
  • Early fall (late October through mid-November): at this time of year, leaves quickly accumulate in your gutters. Their sheer volume requires the gutters to be cleaned.
  • Late fall (late November through the end of January): when most leaves are off the trees. This gutter cleaning is a balancing act of waiting for most leaves to be off the trees but not waiting too long so that all gutters freeze with the leaves in them.

What signs show that I might need new roof or chimney flashing?

Is your roof is starting to peel, or is mold is beginning to form in your attic?

Both of these signs indicate that water has been seeping in — which means that you probably need new roof flashing.

How do I know when it’s time to clean my chimney?

The best way is a professional inspection. If you look up in the chimney and you see material building up on the damper a quarter to an eighth of an inch thick that is usually a sign. Getting a shower of debris when you open and/or close the damper is also a sure sign of creosote. As a point of reference, you should know that freshly cut woods tend to build up creosote faster than hardwoods. Creosote is a carcinogen, and can be quite hazardous to your health.

Does Gary’s Gutter Service provide free chimney inspections?

Yes.

How often should my chimney be cleaned?

If you only use it a few times a year, your chimney will probably be fine with one cleaning every year. However, if you use your chimney all day everyday, you may need several cleanings throughout the winter months.

If you have a stove or fireplace insert, you will have to clean your chimney more often. Your fireplace usage, the location of your chimney, and its construction all affect how much creosote builds up.

Why is it important to check my chimney?

Having your chimney swept and inspected regularly will improve the air quality in your home, but it’s also crucial for the prevention of hazards that can arise from build-up, obstructions or cracks. Neglecting the care of your chimney can restrict the flow of gases and cause smoke to reenter the home and even cause a fire. We recommend an annual maintenance check for all wood-burning and oil chimneys, especially before the winter season, when chimneys are used the most.
